Select Ingredients

Slow Cooker Zesty BBQ Chicken ingredients: bbq sauce, worcestershire, chicken breasts, italian dressing, and brown sugar
  • Chicken Breasts - I love chicken breasts best in this recipe as it keeps it lean. I typically use fresh but you could use frozen if you prefer.
  • BBQ sauce - you can use any kind you'd like. I usually go with Sweet Baby Ray's but any kind is fine. You can use a lower sugar version too as the brown sugar will add additional sweetness.

Recipe Tips & Variations

➡️ Turn it into sliders - Serve on slider buns with coleslaw for your next party or for little hands!

➡️ BBQ chicken tacos - Use the shredded chicken in tortillas with slaw and a drizzle of ranch or crema.

➡️ Use chicken thighs - For a juicier, more tender chicken, you can swap chicken breast for boneless, skinless thighs.

What should I serve with BBQ Chicken?

This recipe is super versatile! You can serve it on sandwiches, in wraps, over rice, on salads, or even on top of tortilla chips to make BBQ chicken nachos.

Why is my sauce watery?

Chicken releases liquid as it cooks. To thicken the sauce, remove the lid for the last 20-30 minutes or drain some of the excess liquid before shredding.

How do I store and reheat these BBQ Chicken leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through.

Notes

Nutrition disclaimer: Nutrition facts are estimates and may vary by ingredients, brands, and portion sizes. Use them as a general guide, not a guarantee.
Chicken options: You can use chicken breast or chicken thighs in this Crockpot BBQ chicken recipe. Thighs will be a bit more tender and juicy, while breasts keep it lean and high protein.
Shredding tip: For easy shredded BBQ chicken, use two forks or a hand mixer right in the slow cooker once the chicken is fully cooked.
Sauce consistency: If the sauce is too thin, remove the lid for the last 20–30 minutes to let it thicken, or drain a small amount of liquid before shredding.
Flavor balance: This recipe has a sweet and tangy BBQ flavor from the brown sugar and Italian dressing. For less sweetness, reduce the brown sugar slightly.
Meal prep friendly: This recipe stores well in the fridge for up to 4 days and reheats easily, making it perfect for meal prep.
